From Beginner to Expert
When I say “Anyone can garden,” I mean it. Twenty years ago, I moved from Brooklyn, New York, to the suburbs of New Jersey, the Garden State. That first fall, I saw someone planting bulbs and thought, that is such a suburban thing to do! I wish I knew how. I knew nothing about plants. I couldn’t even tell you what a weed was!
I began taking a garden course at our local adult school. On top of learning how to garden, we were incredibly lucky to have access to a greenhouse where we learned how to grow flowers from seed and propagate plants from cuttings. The course ran from October to May, and by the time it wrapped up for the season, we had so many different kinds of plants from trading.
I took this course EIGHT times. I was OBSESSED. Gardening became a lifeline to me. I can’t explain it, but the flowers spoke to me. I would listen and just get a feel for where to place them. One summer, I started taking on small gardening jobs and designing containers—and The Inspired Garden was born!
I chose the name The Inspired Garden because I believe the spaces around us should inspire us. Nothing on earth has colors like flowers. The lines, the beauty, the magic of flowers have the power to transform your world and take you to another place. I believe everyone should have a place of peace and sanctuary, where you are enveloped in beauty and nature. And let’s be honest, gardening is cheaper than therapy. (I have this on a sign in my house!)
At the heart of my design philosophy lies the concept of “imperfectly perfect.” There is nothing more rewarding to me than bringing the joy of gardening to others and watching them fall in love with it as well. That’s why I started this course—so you too can go from not knowing what a weed is to designing professional-level gardens and containers.
There is a lot of information (and misinformation) out there on gardening, and it can be overwhelming. My goal is to take the guesswork out of the design process so that when the flowers speak to you, you know how to listen.

All zones. This is first and foremost a design course. When referring to our plant lists, you may find some plants that are annuals in one zone but are actually perennials in yours! ALWAYS refer to the plant tag when shopping for plants, or ask your local nursery to assist you in finding plants that are just right for your zone.
